Spartan Style Barbershop celebrates 40 years in Sycamore

SYCAMORE — Don Henderson said he’s semiretired at age 80.

The owner of Spartan Style Barbershop in Sycamore might have a lighter schedule nowadays, but he still keeps busy and cuts hair as he did when he started more than 60 years ago.

“Having contact with people, it makes it worth me getting up in the morning,” he said. “I just enjoy it. Thank God I’m healthy enough to do it still at 80 years old.”

Spartan Style Barbershop, located at 550 Route 64, Sycamore, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. Henderson said he will provide refreshments throughout the month for his clients to celebrate the holiday season and the shop's anniversary.

Before owning the barbershop, Henderson established his fundamentals at Klip Joint in DeKalb, which was where the current Brian Bemis Toyota dealership is at 1890 Sycamore Road.

He credits Spartan Style’s growth to his devoted customer base, consisting of clients mostly 35 and older. Henderson said he has 100-plus consistent clients.

“We’re not too big, we’re not too small of a community,” Henderson said. “It’s all about the camaraderie and friendliness. I build a relationship with my client, they build a relationship with me. It’s kind of a trust thing.”

When Henderson isn’t chopping hair, he enjoys playing golf at Sycamore Golf Club, doing yardwork around his house and enjoying the semiretired life with his wife, Sharon.
