The Lighting of the Square in Woodstock always has been more than just a flip of the switch to the hundreds of people who come to watch every year.
To many, it’s a magical start to the holidays. And this year, there’ll be even more magic, organizers say.
“All these people come out, and it’s like ‘awww,’ and then everyone scatters and goes to eat,” said Danielle Gulli, executive director of the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “We thought it’d be nice for them to stick around and enjoy the evening.”
Along with the lighting at 7 p.m. Nov. 24, the event has expanded to include holiday activities, such as children’s crafts, carolers, sweets, food vendors and displays, from 5 to 9 p.m., as well as a heated tent with at least 15 area nonprofit groups selling gift items and offering information.
“We’re trying to take the focus off the commercial side of it and make it about tradition and family and fun and giving back,” Gulli said.
Woodstock is “kind of frozen in time a little bit,” especially at Christmas when horse-drawn carriage rides take visitors around the Square, offering up a Norman Rockwell-like atmosphere, she said.
• • •
“There’s just that charm factor that you don’t find anywhere else,” she said.
The Lighting of the Square is one of numerous holiday traditions in McHenry County, where communities look to offer a mix of holiday spirit and charm.
Another popular draw, the Festival of Lights Parade will light up downtown Crystal Lake beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 24. With a theme of “A Candy Cane Christmas” this year, the event is an official welcome for Santa with music, pageantry and, of course, lights. Crystal Lake also has its Christmas the Dole, celebrating its 15th anniversary with a family art show (yes, Santa will be there, too) Dec. 1 and a gala Dec. 2 at Lakeside Arts Park
Other communities have their own holiday traditions, including A Very Merry Huntley Dec. 1-2, Richmond’s Christmas of Yesteryear Dec. 1-3, a Dec. 3 Merry Cary Holiday Parade and Festival and a new Flurry Fest on Dec. 16 in Lake in the Hills, among others.
The holidays also come to area stages with “It’s a Wonderful Life” opening Nov. 24 at the Woodstock Opera House, “Home for the Holidays” opening Dec. 22 at the Raue Center for the Arts in Crystal Lake and “The Nutcracker” coming to both stages – Dec. 9-17 at the Opera House and Dec. 16-17 at the Raue.
