Morris boys soccer topples Yorkville

YORKVILLE – The Morris boys soccer team ended its regular season on a high note Thursday, defeating Yorkville, 2-1, on the Foxes' Senior Night.

Conner Shaw scored both goals for the Redskins (8-8-3), with both assists coming from Kaleb Hefford.

"This was a very important game for us to win," Morris coach David Valdivia said. "We have struggled all season, losing or tying in our confernce. We were able to end the season in a highlight.

"With around 15 minutes left, we switched formations and we were able to hold our lead. I am very proud of these guys."

Morris won the JV game, 1-0, on a goal by Francisco Perez and an assist by Sam Crisman.

The Redskins, who dropped a 1-0 decision to Sycamore on Wednesday, host the Class 2A Morris Regional next week, playing Kankakee on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

Class 1A Coal City Regional: Coal City fell to Momence in overtime Thursday night, 2-1. Momence scored in the first half off of a penalty kick. In the second half, Coal City tied the game with a goal by Austin Planeta, which was assisted by Alex Friddle. In overtime, Momence scored on an own goal that gave them to the win. Coal City improved from a 7-11 record last year to finishing 12-8-1 this season.

Class 1A Serena Regional: Newark's season ended with a 1-0 loss to Somonauk on Thursday, despite eight saves from goal keeper Silas Odum. The Norsemen finished with a 7-9-4 record.

VOLLEYBALL

Minooka 25-25, Plainfield South 6-22: Minooka (27-1, 12-0) was led in the Southwest Prairie Conference win by Rocky Perinar, who had six kills, a block and four digs, and Allison Papesh, who amassed five kills, two aces, and seven digs. Holly Bonde had five kills, five blocks, three aces and seven digs, while Zoey Seput had 22 assists.

Coal City 25-25, Lisle 22-13: Brooke Chapman had 14 assists, four kills, a block and four digs for the Coalers (14-12, 7-3) in the Interstate Eight win. Katelyn Sisk had seven kills and two aces, while Lauren Phillips had three kills. Ali Brancato had a team-high 11 digs, with Olivia Skubic adding seven.

Seneca 25-25, Reed-Custer 15-14: Morgan Pifer had 21 digs and seven service points to lead Seneca (8-17-4, 1-10) to its first Interstate Eight Conference win. Grace Alley had six kills, while Lexi Greve had four and Alyssa Hauch, Holly Baker and Kylie Winsor all had three. Winsor added 11 assists and Maggie Cade had seven.

Newark 25-25, Somonauk 15-9: The Lady Norse (25-3, 7-0) remaine unbeaten in the Little Ten Conference with the win as Madi Malone had 11 kills, nine digs and two aces. Mattie Chapman added five kills, while Alyssa Gittins had four. Meggie Scott had nine digs and Riane Tomsa added eight. Olivia Nelson had 19 assists, five digs and two aces.
