A Wheaton man who died after a fall at Wrigley Field following a Chicago Cubs game May 16 had climbed a railing with a red cup in his hand and then tumbled backward, landing on his head after falling about 10 to 12 feet, according to a police report obtained July 20 by Suburban Life Media.
Richard "Rick" Garrity, 42, a 1992 graduate of St. Francis High School in Wheaton, was pronounced dead at 3:33 p.m. May 17 at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office on May 18 said he died of head injuries and ruled his death accidental.
Suburban Life Media on May 23 filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Chicago Police Department regarding his death. According to the report, Garrity was leaving Wrigley Field after a Cubs game and was observed climbing over a railing and then falling 10 to 12 feet backward, landing on his side and head.
Witnesses said they observed Garrity had a red cup in his hand before the fall. The report stated Garrity was sober at the time.
The investigation into Garrity's death remains open, said Gary Rubenstein, Chicago Police Department Freedom of Information Act officer.
