Guac N Tacos in Downers Grove sees early success with authentic fare

DOWNERS GROVE – The interior design of the new Guac N Tacos restaurant in Downers Grove is nearly identical to the Mexican eatery's Elmhurst location, but layout is not the only thing the two establishments have in common.

Both have enjoyed success from the time their doors opened, owner Alex Fuentes said.

The Elmhurst location, 116 S. York St., opened about one year ago, followed by the Downers Grove restaurant a few months ago. Both enjoy the benefits associated with bustling downtowns.

During the lunch hour, seating at the Downers Grove site is filled while the carry-out clientele is steady.

Guac N Tacos' early success has Fuentes considering a third location for his brand of Mexican food.

“It’s very authentic with good ingredients,” Fuentes said recently while enjoying lunch at the family-owned restaurant.

Guac N Tacos is yet another addition to the burgeoning restaurant scene in downtown Downers Grove.

The storefront eatery, 4948 Main St., is located in a small strip mall at the northern edge of the business district. A small number of tables and bright yellow chairs are near the window and along the wall across from the counter.

“It’s not a formal restaurant,” said Fuentes, an experienced cook who specializes in Latin American cuisine. He often can be found behind the counter working with the small staff that cooks and serves the food.

Guac N Tacos’ one-page menu features authentic dishes created to meet every taste and preference.

“There’s meat, no meat and seafood,” Fuentes said, noting the wide selection of tacos available.

That selection includes grilled steak and chicken tacos, as well as tacos al pastor and pulled chicken tingas. Chile poblano, chorizo and mole round out the taco selections, which are served on homemade corn tortillas. Cheese or guacamole are available for a minimal charge.

Tacos aren’t the only fare available. The menu features specialties including cheese and meat quesadillas, burritos, crispy flautas and ceviche.

Patrons with a sweet tooth can follow their authentic meal with flan or ice cream.

Diners won’t break the bank at Guac N Tacos either.

“We have very affordable prices,” Fuentes said.

In fact, most tacos on the menu cost $2.75, while the specialty dishes range from $4.80 to $6.80.
