Carmella Russell, a standout athlete from Minooka High School, has announced her decision to enroll this fall at Augustana, where she plans on continuing her education and bowling career as a member of coach Marty Resner’s inaugural Viking team.
Russell spent three years as the anchor in coach Frank Yudzentis’ lineup at Minooka, earning All-Southwest Prairie Conference honors as both a junior and senior. She was also coached as an Indian by Resner’s brother, Mickey.
The highlight of Russell’s senior season was rolling a 1,375 series and a 300 game in winning the IHSA Andrew sectional. At state, she bowled a 2,299 for 12 games to help Minooka bring home a 10th-place finish. She finished the year with an average of 195.
As a junior, Russell had a 194 average and finished 70th at the state tournament with a 2,261 series. She was also a member of Minooka’s fifth-place state finisher as a freshman in 2013-14.
Carmella is the daughter of Michelle Russell of Minooka. A four-year Illinois State Scholar and scholar athlete, she scored a 33 on the ACT and is planning on a physics major at Augustana.
