Public star party planned at Afton Forest Preserve

The Northwest Suburban Astronomers, in cooperation with the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, will host a public star party on Saturday at Afton Preserve, 13600 Crego Road, south of DeKalb.

Attendees can view and learn about planets, stars, galaxies, nebulae and star clusters with the help of NSA members and their telescopes. Observing highlights may include the planet Jupiter, Globular Clusters M3, M13, M92, various galaxies in Leo and the Virgo Cluster, the Beehive Cluster in Cancer, and other celestial objects.

Dress for evening temperatures and bring a flashlight covered with red plastic or cellophane (red light preserves everyone’s night vision) as well as insect repellent. Arrive by 8 p.m. (sunset is at 7:54 p.m.). Participants can bring their own telescope or binoculars. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be canceled. There is no cost to attend and no registration is required.
