A Step Above Dance Academy makes a move in Batavia

BATAVIA – A Step Above Dance Academy moved into spacious new quarters in Batavia last month.

After almost six years at the corner of Wilson and North River streets above El Taco Grande in Batavia, Shannon Holst relocated her academy to 129 Flinn St., almost doubling the space to 6,200 square feet. She said it took several months to build out the site to her specifications, which includes four large studios, offices and storage.

“Because this was a warehouse space, the floors were rough concrete,” Holst said, noting the new flooring measures 4,100 square feet. “We had all the floors professionally leveled, and we installed a sprung dance floor.”

It involved layering plywood and foam, all topped with a Marley-style, rubberized surface that is protective of performers.

“It helps with traction, and is not slippery and not sticky – a good in-between surface for dancers,” Holst said.

She and her staff teach students ages 2 to 18, offering classes at all levels from preschool dance to advanced training in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop and contemporary. Her competition dancers ages 4 to 18 are headed to nationals in July.

“They are amazing,” she said. “We hold auditions for that in June. The last several years, they have come home with several national titles. They are eager to get back on the national floor and bring some back.”

The academy also fields an outreach troupe of girls who perform at community and sporting events.

A summer recital will begin at 5:30 p.m. June 3, at West Aurora High School, showcasing all ages and the varied styles of dance taught at the academy. Tickets for event are sold at the door.

“It’s a great show,” said Holst, an award-winning choreographer.

She came up with the name of her academy in a college class business plan she created while she was a junior, and it has stuck.

Holst also offers private yoga lessons, and for youth entering the world of gymnastics and figure skating competition, helps them elevate their artistry with polishing touches.

“I come from a gymnastics and dance background,” she said. “From the time I was 3 to 17, I was competing in both dance and gymnastics. I was a busy kid. I didn’t want to give either up until it was time to go to college. I chose dance … It led me to this path.”

The academy is south of Wilson Street near the west bank of the Fox River.
