CNBC's 'American Greed' to feature Fox Lake Police Lt. Joe Gliniewicz case

FOX LAKE – A national TV network will feature the case of disgraced Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz.

The case will be featured on CNBC as a part of “American Greed,” a true crime series that examines the dark side of the American dream. The episode will air at 9 p.m. Monday.

The show will explore what was first thought of as an officer killed in the line of duty while investigating three suspicious men. Detectives later concluded that Gliniewicz shot himself the morning of Sept. 1, 2015, because he was worried his illegal activities were going to be discovered.

The suicide was staged to look like a homicide, which initially resulted in a lengthy manhunt, a hero’s funeral and an investigation that garnered national attention.

Lake County Sheriff’s then-Detective Chris Covelli was one of the subjects interviewed for the episode. Covelli has since been promoted to sergeant.

Joe Gliniewicz's wife, Melodie Gliniewicz, was indicted in 2016 after prosecutors said she played a role in laundering money and using more than $10,000 worth of charitable funds related to the village's Police Explorers youth program. She has denied all charges. If convicted, Melodie Gliniewicz could face up to seven years in prison or probation.

She also filed for her husband’s pension a few months ago in hopes of receiving the money in a timely fashion in order to pay her and her children’s living expenses. The Fox Lake Police Pension Board is delaying its decision until after her trial, which has been scheduled for May 30.
