Andres Leon-Hernandez, an eighth-grade student at Clinton Rosette Middle School in DeKalb, won the school's National Geographic Bee and a chance to move on to the state competition. The school bee was held Jan. 24. Qualifying students answered questions related to U.S. and world geography. Other students who competed were Jason Pedraza (first runner-up), Joey Newport (second runner-up), Brogan Long, Lama Ghrayeb, Jessenia Ramirez, Jimena Rodriguez, Yu Xuan Ni, Reyna Casteneda and Joel Panders. As school champion, Leon-Hernandez will take a written test that will determine his eligibility to move on to the state round of competition. The state winner will compete in Washington, D.C., in the final round of the National Geographic Bee.
