Local high school students test business savvy

DIXON – Students from the Sauk Valley and Illinois Valley went head-to-head during the Oct. 14 Dr. David and Dr. Agnes Palmer Junior Achievement Titan Competition at Sauk Valley Community College.

Six high school teams from Dixon, LaSalle-Peru, Mendota, Princeton, and Prophetstown competed. Each team included four students and one business mentor (an adult community volunteer).

JA Titan is an interactive online business simulation that offers a way for students to learn what it takes to compete in the marketplace and to run a successful business.

During the 1-day competition, each team is on a management team of a virtual company and needs to make critical decisions about the business in order to make a profit in a very competitive industry.

After competing in several business quarters, Princeton Township High School pulled away for the win.

Dixon Team 1 members are Zoe Carr, Ben Drezen, Taryn Munroe, and Thailer Somsri-Betts. Their business mentor is Aaron Fox of KSB Hospital. Team 2 members are Darius McGlown, Mason Rhodenbaugh, AJ Schmall, and Whitney Williamson, mentored by Tony Evers, also of KSB Hospital.

Prophetstown High School students, Owen Behrens, Tyler Braasch, Kevin Sigel, and Kyle Sigel won the business logo category. They are mentored by Tya Boucher of IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union.
