A man and woman died in the early morning hours Sunday after a crash on Interstate 80.

The incident occurred about 4 a.m. on westbound I-80 near La Grange Road in the Tinley Park area, Illinois State Police District 5 Sgt. Brad Sprague said.

Shantonia T. Giles, 26, of University Park, and Timothy J. Hampton-Cofield, 22, of Chicago, were pronounced dead about an hour later near the scene, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.

Giles and Hampton-Cofield were the occupants of a car that was involved in a crash with a semitrailer, Sprague said. No information was available late Sunday afternoon about the semi driver, he said, and the incident remained under investigation.

The final causes and manners of deaths for Giles and Hampton-Cofield are pending autopsy, toxicological and police reports, according to the Coroner's Office. Coroner's exams are scheduled for Monday.
