Chris Foat Memorial Softball Tournament raises funds for Woodstock athlete scholarships

The ninth annual Chris Foat Memorial Softball Tournament took place Saturday at Emricson Park to raise money for scholarships that will be given to two Woodstock High School graduates in Foat’s honor.

Foat, a 2002 Woodstock grad, died in 2007 when he was struck by a drunken driver while walking home with friends. His family and friends banded together with the tournament to fund scholarships to a Blue Streaks football player and wrestler each year. Both will receive $1,000 scholarships and an additional $500 scholarship also will be presented.

In the previous eight years, $35,000 in scholarships has been raised.

The co-ed softball tournament was played Saturday at Emricson Park with a $150 entry fee per team. The event also had sponsors and donors to help. Alysia Avery Friedel Foat, Chris’ daughter, also is honored by the tournament.

There was a party after the tournament at the Pourhouse in Woodstock, where several items were sold in a silent auction.
