WOODSTOCK – The Square will lose a bit of its sweetness by the end of the month.
Jaci Krandel announced recently that she will close Jaci's Cookies on Sept. 30 after eight years on the baking scene. Krandel said she will remain active in the Woodstock community, but needed a break from the business. Krandel has lived in Woodstock her entire life and serves on different boards, including the Woodstock District 200 Education Foundation board.
“I’m just tired,” she said. “I have a lot going on in my personal life. I’m healthy and everything is fine, but I am involved in a lot and it gets demanding. I have to adjust my priorities a little.”
Jaci’s Cookies primarily bakes and decorates gourmet cookies and also sells biscuits, scones, gift baskets and care packages. Krandel began the business operating out of Bella’s Gelateria’s basement and eventually moved into a storefront at 124 Cass St. on Woodstock’s Historic Square.
“She’s been a big part of the personality of Woodstock,” said council member Maureen Larson, who acknowledged the closing at a recent City Council meeting. “I don’t think you could go to any student event or play or anything that didn’t have Jaci’s cookies at them.”
Larson said that Krandel played a big part in making Woodstock’s business community a strong one. Krandel often participated in fundraisers and silent auction raffles for local nonprofits. Although she still will be around, finding another way to support the community will be a new task, Krandel said.
“I will miss my amazing customers and the very supportive business community,” Krandel said. “And I will have to change what kind of support I can offer to the nonprofits, which have always been first to me.”
