It’s no accident that RML Specialty Hospital has the word “special” in its name. Each fall, RML sponsors an annual golf tournament to raise funds for patients and families during what can be a stressful, trying time in their lives.
A golf outing is a great way to reach out to the community, and to create awareness of what RML Specialty Hospital has to offer. Patients who come to RML have usually been in a traditional hospital setting for the previous 20-30 days. RML offers daily medical management that can’t be done in a skilled nursing facility. As an LTACH (long-term acute care hospital), RML is a very important part of the continuum of patient care.
When a patient is admitted, the situation can be very difficult for family members. They may miss work, resulting in financial need. Many need assistance with transportation due to their age, weather, and other factors. They need meals while visiting the patients, and often times need to stay in a nearby hotel.
“The small things make a huge difference for patients and families,” said Tricia Vaisvila, Vice President of Business Development at RML. “The funds we raise from our annual golf tournament help us cover the costs of keeping patients and families together. It also supports our chaplain service, which provides spiritual, non-denominational support for patients and families.”
Prayer blankets are a much-loved traditional gift to patients who request them. “Our staff and their family members create these blankets by hand,” added Vaisvila. “Patients absolutely love the blankets; they mean the world to them during times of stress and uncertainty.”
