Children have special considerations that need to be addressed when they are treated for injuries or genetic conditions. It’s especially important to take into account their family dynamic, the social aspects of the child’s life, and how they function in school.
Marianjoy addresses these concerns as part of their Pediatric Rehabilitation Program, which provides therapy and other special services for their young patients. Dr. Larissa Pavone is part of this special program that has a very diverse patient population. “We treat children with genetic conditions, such as Down syndrome and Angelman syndrome; congenital conditions, such as cerebral palsy and autism; and cancer,” said Dr. Pavone. “We also treat children who have experienced injuries such as concussion, traumatic brain injury, multiple traumas, and spinal cord injury.”
Dr. Pavone is proud of the comprehensive services provided by Marianjoy’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Program. “We are able to treat children across a spectrum of recovery,” she said. “For example, after a child is hospitalized for a traumatic brain injury, they may come to Marianjoy for intensive inpatient rehabilitation. After discharge, they may continue at Marianjoy for comprehensive outpatient services.”
The Pediatric Rehabilitation Program offers wheelchair seating and positioning; prosthetics and orthotics; neuropsychological testing; driver’s training; and vocational rehabilitation. “We have case management services that help us reintegrate children back into school and the community,” said Dr. Pavone. “The physicians, therapists, orthotists, nurses, and social workers work closely together to provide the best care. The team collaboration is the best approach for the many complex cases that we see.” For more information, please contact:
