Use ‘sunscreen’ for your car

The same ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun that damage skin, can also prematurely fade and oxidize your car's paint, dulling the finish.  To prevent sun damage, and keep your car looking new longer, Angie'sList.com recommends:

“Seek covered or sheltered parking whenever possible.  This protects not only your car’s paint, but also its headlights and rubberized trim.  You can also undo some of the damage from UV rays, heat, bugs, and bird droppings by washing your car often.”

Working away from direct sunlight, wash your car with soft cloths and automotive cleaning products.  Avoid scratching off dried debris, but use "an auto-detailing clay bar. Claying is a safe way to remove damaging materials without leaving a trace," Angie'sList says.  Also, "dry your car thoroughly with a cotton rag or chamois.  This protects your paint from minerals left behind by water evaporation."

Waxing a car is recommended to not only protect the paint, but to repel roadside dirt and grit from pitting the finish.  Since “engine heat stresses the hood’s paint, and direct sunlight can scorch the paint off the roof,” washing and waxing can help.

Some car autobody shops offer detailing services to restore damaged paint, or even re-paint if the finish is irreparable.

Should you cover your car when it’s exposed for long periods in the sun?  Allstate Insurance says, “If you don’t have covered parking where you live or work, you could invest in a car cover.  These fitted car blankets are like sunscreen for your vehicle’s paint.  Car covers are a great way to keep the sun and dirt off the exterior of your car while shielding the interior from sun damage.  Though not as effective as a garage or carport, a weather-resistant car cover will help protect your vehicle from the elements.”
