High school baseball: Huntley shut out by Mundelein in supersectional

SCHAUMBURG – Huntley’s problem did not stem from playing its second game Monday as much as who it was playing in that second game.

Mundelein unleashed a relentless offense, along with dominant right-hander Will Michalski, and defeated the Red Raiders, 8-0, Monday night in the Class 4A Schaumburg Boomers Supersectional No. 2.

Huntley (25-15) managed three hits off Michalski, who struck out eight and fired a complete game. The Mustangs (30-9) ripped 11 hits to advance to the Class 4A state tournament Friday at Joliet’s Silver Cross Field.

“We could have played a little bit better today,” Raiders shortstop Charlie Nugent said. “But we had a great season compared to last year (9-27). To be the last [Fox Valley Conference] team playing is a great feeling. We made it to the Super, we just weren’t able to finish.”

Huntley defeated Grant, 5-4, to win the Huntley Sectional championship Monday afternoon. That game was rained out Saturday, forcing the teams to play Monday, with the winner traveling to Schaumburg for a second game.

“It wasn’t difficult at all, we just got beat by a better team today,” Huntley coach Andy Jakubowski said. “Their starting pitcher set the tone early. They executed tremendously well. They have a lot of team speed. … It just wasn’t meant to be today.”

Huntley got off to a good start when leadoff man Jeff Heinrich singled, but he was thrown out at second stealing, only the second time all season he was thrown out.

The Raiders' starting lineup had only two seniors, Nugent and second baseman Trevor Ranallo.

“We went beyond our expectations going into the season,” Heinrich said. “I feel like we had the talent to go to state, it just didn’t work out like that. We exceeded our expectations, so it was a pretty good season all along.”

Starter Adam Smylie kept the Mustangs off the board for the first two innings, but after that it became difficult. Mundelein got three hits in each of the next three innings to break the game open.

“Hopeully, we’ll learn from this experience,” Jakubowski said. “I think we’ll continue to get better, and, hopefully, we can get back down here and hoist that trophy.”

Nugent expects a lot next season from a team that had only five seniors.

“Once we all started to click, it was fun to be here every day with these guys,” Nugent said. “It was fun to give our best effort. It’s going to keep going with next year’s team. I believe they’ll be even better, I think they’ll make it down to Joliet.”
