Howard E. Detra Sr., 93, Dodgeville, Wisconsin, a lifelong farmer, died on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Bloomfield Manor.
Howard was born on Sept. 20, 1922 in Malvern, to Ralph and Leona (Longenacker) Detra.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands.
Howard married Mary Jane Davison, Oregon, on Sept. 7, 1947.
The couple farmed in Illinois and moved to their farm near Dodgeville in 1971. Mary preceded him in death on Oct. 16, 1989.
Howard truly enjoyed farming and raising animals.
In his spare time, he liked to fish and listen to the Chicago Cubs games.
Howard is survived by three sons, Howard Jr., South Wayne, Wisconsin, Ralph (Nancy), Postville, Iowa, and Stuart, Dodgeville, Wisconsin; four daughters, Barbara Detra, Blue River, Wisconsin, and Karen Detra, Deborah Detra, and Jody (Gary) Snyder, all of Janesville, Wisconsin; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Crandall of Bella Vista, Arkansas; four sisters-in-law, Geraldine Detra, Loves Park, Kathleen Gilman, Chicago; Betty (David) Schmelzer, Rockford, and Mary Davison, Oregon; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Richard and Stephen; three sisters, Doris Hartman, Mary Jo McCrae, and Elizabeth Chapman; and two brothers, Charles and Gerald Detra.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 28 at 3 p.m. at the Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home, Dodgeville, Wisconsin, with Pastor Kathy Jacobson officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday after 1 p.m.
Burial will be in Washington Grove Cemetery near Oregon, on Friday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
