ELMHURST – Nancy Resing always knew she would open a fashion retail boutique. She was just waiting for the right time to do it.
Resing is the owner of Hazyl Boutique, 106 W. Second St., a women's clothing store that offers a personalized shopping experience and a variety of items and accessories for all occasions.
She opened for business March 1 and has been happy with the initial reception. Resing attributes some of that to her large family, who she says helped her spread the word about Hazyl. But by the way she greets her customers, it’s clear she has a solid presence in the community as well.
Resing is originally from La Grange, but she has been living in Elmhurst for 26 years. She and her husband raised four children in Elmhurst, so she knows a lot of people in the city.
That’s made the experience a friendly one for everyone involved.
“I want to give a comfortable experience and not something that is intimidating because I’m one of them, this is my town,” Resing said. “I know a lot of the women that come here, and I see a lot of friendly faces. Sometimes I feel like we are just hanging out.”
Before Hazyl Boutique, Resing was working as the buyer and merchandiser for another clothing store. Before that, she worked as a part-time manager at The Limited. She has a lot of experience in the industry, and at one point she was co-owner of another store, Ananas in Downers Grove.
She walked away from the retail world because she wanted to have a family, but now her four children are old enough that she can dedicate time to the store.
“I’ve always known that I wanted to eventually [open a fashion boutique], but with all the kids, the time was not quite right,” she said.
The concept behind Hazyl Boutique has to do with the multiplicity of the color hazel.
“There are so many colors that go into a hazel eye. It is not defined by one color, so there could be blues and greens and yellows and browns in there,” Resing said. “That’s how I take women’s roles. You’re not defined as a mom, you’re not defined as a business woman, you’re not defined as a yoga instructor or a grandma or an aunt. You have so many different roles. You don’t have to be defined by one.”
Resing wants to help women find fashionable outfits for different occasions. Hazyl Boutique covers the whole range, from formal to exercise clothes, and is for women of all ages.
“Whether you are in your 20s and want to hit the town, there is something cute and sexy for that kind of look,” Resing said. “If there is someone who wants to go to a yoga class and wear a cute T-shirt and a tank, you can do that. There’s denim for those casual moms who want to run errands and cute little dresses for a shower, a wedding or a mother’s day brunch.”
The success of the young fashion retail store is yet to be seen, but Resing is confident she can make her business thrive. She is sure women will want to shop in Hazyl Boutique, not just because of the wide range of clothing, but also because of the unique pieces they could find.
“I love being part of the town and helping women here,” Resing said. “I feel like I have my finger on the pulse, I know what they want, I get what they need, and have the type of clothes and styles that they are looking for.”
