SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man who police said made more than 11 hours' worth of harassing phone calls and death threats from DeKalb County Jail remained behind bars there Tuesday and faces new, more serious criminal charges.
Cardell C. Curry, 27, of the 200 block of East Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb, was charged with harassing a witness, typically punishable by three to seven years in prison.
Depending on the outcome of some of Curry's ongoing cases, however, he could face six to 30 years in prison, Assistant State's Attorney Rachel McIntyre said.
Curry has been jailed on domestic battery, violation of bail or bond, and unlawful restraint charges since Oct. 19, jail officials said.
He was arrested Sept. 21 after police said he struck a woman in the face at Kishwaukee Hospital.
Jail officials found calls in their system that Curry had made between Nov. 24 and Nov. 30 to a reported victim in another case, court records show.
The person Curry called is a potential witness in one of his pending cases, records show.
Curry previously had been ordered by a judge to have no contact with the person police said he called to harass.
Officials listened to the more than 11 hours of recorded phone calls and found Curry had made a number of threats to harm and kill the potential witness if he were released, McIntyre said.
On Tuesday, DeKalb County Judge Robert Pilmer restricted Curry's jail phone privileges to only allow calls to his public defender, Charles Criswell.
Pilmer set Curry's bond at $750,000, and he must post $75,000 bail to be released.
Curry is due back in court today.
