Grayslake Central boys cross country captures team title at Antioch Regional

Four teams from Lake County, along with three other individuals, qualified for sectionals Saturday during the Antioch Regional at Fox River Park in Burlington, Wis.

Grayslake Central won the team title and its top six runners all finished in the top seven of the race. Jack Aho won the individual title while his brother Matt Aho finished in second place.

Lakes also qualified as a team with a second-place finish at regionals. The Eagles were led by Jeremy Wallace, with an 11th place finish. Grayslake North and Carmel finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.

Grayslake North was led by Liam O’Connell, with an eighth-place finish, and Carmel was led by Stephen Lacke, with a 13th-place finish. Antioch finished seventh and didn’t qualify as a team for sectionals, but the Sequoits do have three individuals moving on. Kevin Vettesse (31), Joe Sculuca (32) and Alex Besson (34) all qualified individually.

Warren finishes third at Lake Forest

In Class 3A, three schools from Lake County qualified for sectionals after their performance at Lake Forest High School during Saturday’s regional. Warren finished in third place and was led by Dustin Macuiba, who was the individual champion. Julian Ruiz was second for the Blue Devils, with a 10th-place finish. Libertyville finished in fourth place and qualified.

The Wildcats were led by Alex Tam, with a fifth-place finish, and Stephen Richardson, with a 10th-place finish. Mundelein was the last team qualifier from the Lake Forest Regional.

The Mustangs were led by Michael Parduhn, with a 12th-place finish. Carlos Rosas from Round Lake qualified as an individual. with a 36th-place finish.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Rams take home team title at Antioch Regional

Much like the boys team, the Grayslake Central girls team brought home a regional championship Saturday at the Antioch Regional. The Rams were led by Megan Girmscheid, with a third-place finish, and Lura Quandt, with a sixth-place finish. Lakes and Carmel finished in second and third place to qualify as teams for next week's sectionals.

Kortney Schardt won the individual title and led Lakes. Carmel was led by Zella Stockhausen, with a fifth-place finish. Antioch had four individuals advance – Natalie Hill (12), Allison Morris (30), Rylie Mercer (33) and Tessa Furlong (35). Caroline Riss (27) of Grayslake North also qualified for sectionals.

Libertyville takes fourth at Lake Forest

Libertyville, Mundelein and Warren all advanced as teams to sectionals. Melissa Manetsch led the Wildcats with a second-place finish. Mundelein was led by Clarissa Wienckowski, with a 17th-place finish, and Emily Jahn led Warren by finishing in 20th place. Yeni Aguirre (39) and Jessica Cuna (42) of Round Lake also qualified as individuals.

GIRLS TENNIS

Girls tennis players completed their state tournament last weekend at various schools throughout the northwest suburbs. Several players from Lake County represented their schools in the three-day tournament.

Grant’s Gaby Schoenberg made it all the way to the consolation quarterfinals before being eliminated. Schoenberg finished 6-2 in the double elimination format. Carmel’s Marie Kapelevich made it to the sixth round of the consolation bracket before being eliminated. Kapelevich finished with a 5-2 record. Libertyville’s Danielle Blaser also made it to the sixth round and finished with a 5-2 record. Wauconda’s Sarah Hackman finished with a 3-2 record and made it to the fifth round of the consolation bracket.
