High school boys golf: Hinsdale Central wins fourth straight title, Glenbard South's Dufort third in Class 2A

BLOOMINGTON – Hinsdale Central's boys golf team trailed in the team race early in the first round of the two-round Class 3A state tournament on Oct. 16.

By the end of the round the Red Devils had a seven-stroke lead, and they held off New Trier during the second round on Oct. 17 as they claimed their fourth straight state title at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course.

Hinsdale Central scored a 621 to top New Trier (624) and Neuqua Valley (625).

Brendan O'Reilly (seventh, 154), Matt Wingren (13th, 156), Drew Shepherd (19th, 157) and Kenneth Li (19th, 157) all had top-20 scores for Central. Grant Labedz (39th, 161) also had a solid two-day score. Ellis Kritzer shot a 92 on Oct. 16 but did not play the second round.

Behind solid scoring by Jordan Less (ninth, 155) and Will Gunst (19th, 157), York placed eighth as a team with a 647 score. Frank Wheatland (165), Mark Leali (172), Tom Manning (175) and Mitchell Russell (180) also played at state for the Dukes.

Lyons Township's Patrick Akaniroj (19th, 157), Max Campbell (26th, 158) and Griffin Wasz (52nd, 165) scored well at state.

Wheaton Warrenville South's Sean McCaffrey shot a 157 to finish in a tie for 19th place.

Glenbard West's Kevin Nelson finished tied for 44th place with a score of 162.

Downers Grove South's Trent Caraher shot an 80 on the second day of the tourney to finish with a 165 score, tied for 52nd overall. Teammate Dean Netzel finished tied for 77th with a score of 170 in his first state tournament.

Glenbard North's Kyle Tintera tied for 60th place with a 166 score.

Benet's Nick Schanzer shot a 171 to finish in a tie for 80th overall.

In the Class 2A tournament at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, Glenbard South's Christopher Dufort finished third individually with a 144 and St. Francis was second as a team with a 638 score.

Jonathan Nocek led the Spartans with a 150 score that was good for a seventh place tie individually. Luke Armbrust (18th, 154), Ryan Keefe (46th, 166), Connor Reinke (68th, 171), Connor Buckley (81st, 173) and Kevin Doherty (103rd, 182) also played at state for St. Francis.

Nazareth's Matthew Clark tied for seventh with a 150 score as the Roadrunners placed eighth as a tam with a 660 total. Andrew Radford (31st, 159), Aidan Smith (81st, 173), George King (96th, 178), Jack Keivan (105th, 188) and Quinn Newman (111th, 193) also represented Nazareth.

Glenbard South's Russell Matos placed 18th overall with a two-day stroke total of 154.

Wheaton Academy's Grant Gosden placed 68th overall with a 171 score.

Lemont was 12th as a team in Class 2A with a 678 score. Raymond Sullivan was Lemont's leader at the tourney as he placed 12th individually with a 152 score. Jack Lund (68th, 171), Matt Retzke (93rd, 177), Jack Kramer and Matt Grasman (both tied for 101st, 180), and Charlie Cannon (105th, 188) also played for Lemont.

In the Class 1A state tournament at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, IC Catholic's Trey Morris was 15th overall with a score of 162 while teammate Connon Leahy finished 60th with a 176 score.
