Girls golf: Glenbard East, York, AT bank on experience, Willowbrook skews young

Girls golfers from across the state have teed off on the 2015 season with the goal of getting to Decatur for the state tournaments in October. Here's the outlook for Addison Trail, Glenbard East, Willowbrook and York this season.

Addison Trail Blazers

Coach: Phil Stewart

Conference: West Suburban Gold

Top players

Name Year

Kelsy Bauers sr.

Francesca Capparelli so.

Faith Czorniak sr.

Allison Galvin sr.

Jessica Muntner sr.

Outlook: The Blazers had just two seniors on the roster last year so the team is hoping to improve around several returners.

Sophomore Francesca Capparelli was one of the team's top golfers last year and is back on varsity this season. In addition, four seniors – Kelsy Bauers, Faith Czorniak, Allison Galvin and Jessica Muntner – are returners as well.

AT opened the season against Wheaton North on Aug. 19.

Glenbard East Rams

Coach: Scott Miller

Conference: Upstate Eight Valley

Top players

Name Year

Sam Katsikas jr.

Grace Ludwig sr.

Gillian Ostrowski sr.

Olivia Sterling sr.

Maggie Verpabele sr.

Outlook: Five of the top six golfers from a 14-2, sectional qualifying team last year are back for the Rams.

Seniors Grace Ludwig and Gillian Ostrowski figure to be the team's top two golfers.

"Both will average in the low 40s [in nine holes]," coach Scott Miller said.

Junior Sam Katsikas and senior Olivia Sterling should also be regulars in the team's top four, and East should get solid scoring from a host of players.

"We have good depth from five through nine," Miller said. "We are very excited with this group."

Willowbrook Warriors

Coaches: Jim White

Conference: West Suburban Gold

Top players

Name Year

Olivia Hartshorn jr.

Maggie Karcz jr.

Sophia Parrillo so.

Outlook: Without any seniors on the team, Willowbrook may have an uphill battle this year.

Juniors Olivia Hartshorn and Maggie Karcz and sophomore Sophia Parrillo should lead the way for the young team. Newcomers Jocie Trausch, a junior, and Jannlyn Bauers, a freshman, are expected to be in the lineup as well.

The Warriors open conference play against Addison Trail at Salt Creek Golf Club in Wood Dale on Aug. 26.

York Dukes

Coach: Barb Tilden

Conference: West Suburban Silver

Top players

Name Year

Megan Backman sr.

Tarryn Becker jr.

Ellen Foley sr.

Christine Millins jr.

Outlook: Sectional qualifiers Megan Backman and Ellen Foley lead the way for a York team that was three shots short of advancing to sectionals as a team last year.

Coach Barb Tilden mentioned juniors Christine Millins and Tarryn Becker as players to look out for after they put in a lot of time on the course in the past year. Seniors Lauren Cairo and Katie Beth Pasternock, junior Jenny Diamond and sophomores Jenna Koeppen, Katie Wegman and Bethany Wilms are also on the roster.

Tilden said she expects the Dukes to be competitive in the tough West Suburban Silver.
