PLAINFIELD – Mayfair Park in Plainfield will on Saturday be renamed “Meari Memorial Park” in honor of a local soldier who lost his life saving others in Afghanistan.

A dedication ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the park, located at the northwest corner of Joe Adler Drive and Ruth Fitzgerald Drive in Plainfield.

The park will be renamed after Pfc. Andrew Meari, a Plainfield South graduate who died Nov. 1, 2010, saving seven soldiers from a suicide bomber.

Residents also are invited to participate in a flag line with a briefing at 9:30 a.m. Updated information is available on the “Project PATRIOTISM” Facebook page.

The park district board voted May 13 to rename Mayfair Park after hearing from Meari’s father about how his son spent many hours of his childhood in the park, according to a news release.

“As commissioners, I believe we all feel that renaming Mayfair Park in honor of this young man who gave his life in service to our nation is a fitting tribute,” Board President Mary Kay Ludemann said in the news release.

The park will be dedicated with a flagpole and plaque in Meari’s honor.
