A Downers Grove woman and a Crystal Lake man were killed in the early morning of June 28 when their motorcycle struck a concrete median barrier on Interstate 290 at Mannheim Road near Hillside, according to Illinois State Police.
About 1:55 a.m. June 28, Matthew Summers, 41, of Crystal Lake, was driving westbound on I-290 while Miranda Valles, 21, of Downers Grove, was a passenger on the gray 2010 BMW motorcycle, according to police.
The BMW was traveling with a group of motorcycles at a high rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, the motorcycle struck a concrete median on I-290 west at Mannheim Road near Hillside. Both Summers and Valles were ejected from the bike and thrown into the westbound lanes, police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The motorcycle then struck a light pole, which fell into the eastbound lanes of I-290. Three vehicles, a Mercedes driven by a 29-year-old Willowbrook man, a Toyota driven by a 29-year-old Hanover Park woman and a Toyota driven by a 26-year-old Cicero woman, struck the pole, but nobody was injured, police said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
