ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles native next week will open a guitar shop in the exact location where his father once owned a guitar shop.

The Jank Guitar Store will open at 1 p.m. June 12 at 217 W. Main St., St. Charles, its owner, Scott Corbin, said.

After the presentation of a guitar to St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina and a ribbon-cutting event, attendees can see the store and receive a $300 gift card toward guitar lessons and merchandise.

The store then will be open seven days a week by appointment only for lessons. Some people already have signed up for lessons on June 13, Corbin said.

Corbin was barely a year old when his father, Jeffrey Corbin, opened St. Charles Guitar in 1985 at 271 W. Main St. in St. Charles. Other businesses had since opened and closed at the property, and Scott Corbin saw it was vacant during a visit last fall.

“I am fortunate to have had a very successful career as a professional guitarist, and I decided to open The Jank Guitar Store because I saw many budget cuts leading to the loss of music education,” Corbin wrote in a statement. “Music changed my life, and I think it is vital for kids to learn about music in school and after school.”

Corbin’s method for guitar lessons is called “Press, Play, Record.” Press refers to having a beginning guitar player know how and where to press on the guitar.

The core value of play refers to body posture and learning chords, melody and musicality, Corbin said. Record is the last part because knowing how to record guitar playing in the age of social media and the Internet is as important as knowing how to play, he said.

The store is named after a signature sound – jank – that Corbin has created as part of the band Casely and the Jank.

Corbin still plans to work with the band and do professional studio work when he’s not at the store.
