DUI charges authorized in Blackberry Township crash

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Charges have been authorized against a 29-year-old DeKalb man who lost control of a vehicle in Blackberry Township, causing it to flip on its roof, according to Kane County records.

Officials with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Green and Smith roads about 5:15 p.m. April 5 and found a red 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt upside down in the 0S700 block of Green Road, according to a sheriff’s report.

Both occupants – the driver, Alexander N. Prohaska, and a 23-year-old Elburn woman – reportedly were lying on the ground near the vehicle upon the officials’ arrival.

Several cans and bottles of beer were next to the wreckage, according to the report.

An accident report indicated the car was headed north on Green Road when it entered a curve and skidded across the road into the southbound lanes. The vehicle reportedly hit two trees and flipped over, landing on its roof. An electrical box also was reported damaged.

Prohaska acknowledged he was driving “way too fast” and said he had a few drinks before driving but felt he was OK to drive, according to the sheriff’s report.

He and the passenger reportedly were taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for treatment. The report indicated the woman suffered from back fractures, a bruised lung and a broken shoulder.

An assistant state’s attorney authorized two felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence because of the extent of the injuries, sheriff’s officials reported.

Online court records show these charges also have been authorized against Prohaska: driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.08 percent, improper lane use and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
