Sterling High School February Student of the Month: Jacob Reynolds

Jacob Reynolds, 18, of Sterling, is one of Sterling High School's February Students of the Month. He is the son of Colin and Kelly Reynolds and he has a sister, Bari, 22.

Favorite class: AP Literature, because it allows me to study something that I love while learning about my classmates' opinions and views on the works. Also, the teacher, Laura Carbaugh, is great.

Least-favorite class: AP biology, because I am not a science person, so it takes me a long time to properly understand the material.

Favorite teacher: Jennifer Drew and Dana Francis, English, because they are very compassionate teachers who obviously love what they do, and they also have helped shape what I plan to do with my life.

School activities: Tennis, golf, National Honor Society, publications

Civic, church, volunteer or activities: I help out around the Big Red (First Congregational) Church, tech for the musicals at Centennial Auditorium, and Happy Tails Animal Shelter.

Do you have a job? I help with productions of Sterling High School sports as graphics coordinator and videographer, and I am an employee at Grummert's Hardware. I also work as an intern at the Sterling Schools Foundation during the summer.

What will you do after high school? I plan to attend Drake University and double major in English and some kind of journalism.

What is something you learned in high school that you think you will never use? Logarithms

What kind of music are you listening to? My musical tastes are pretty eclectic, but I will most likely get caught listening to classic rock from the '70s and '80s, the Beach Boys, or the Beatles.

What is your favorite:

App: Pandora

Food: Strawberries

Game or activity: Tennis

Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis

Movie: "Harry Potter" – the whole series

TV show: "Mad Men"

Sports team: Boston Red Sox

Do you have a hobby? Writing

Is there a celebrity whom you look like/act like/feel like? I've been told I look like Dan Aykroyd and Colin Hanks, which I kind of see, and kind of don't.

What's the one thing in your life you can't do without? My "Harry Potter" books

What is your advice for surviving high school? Hang around people who make you laugh and work as hard as you can on schoolwork.

What scares you? Heights, because nothing is scarier than feeling like you're about to fall down a long ways and have nothing to stop it.

What's something about you that nobody knows? My favorite song is "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys.

If you could ask President Obama any question, what would it be? Really? Your favorite baseball team is the White Sox?

If you could try any job for a day, what would it be? I would be a video game designer, because it would be cool to see how much work goes into creating something like a video game.

If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? Switzerland, because the landscape is beautiful, and the chocolate, of course.

What is the last good book you read? "The House of the Seven Gables" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I liked it because I am interested in Dark Romanticism and the story is great.

What is your proudest moment? When I was named an editor of the school yearbook and newspaper. It is nice to know that I am in charge of something people can look back on years from now.

Who is your hero/role model? J.K. Rowling, because she proved that one idea can make an impact on millions of lives.

Is there anything else you would want people to know about you? I have read 25 Shakespeare plays and all of his sonnets. I would say my favorite play so far is "Hamlet."

Is there someone you'd like to send a shout out to? My aunt, Jone Bone, my publications class, and all of my teachers whom I have had over the years. I have not had one bad teacher in my K-12 experience, so I would just like to say to all of them thank you for helping me in so many ways.
