JOLIET – St. Francis’ Adam Panayotovich was named NAIA National Pitcher of the Week after throwing a pair of extra-inning shutouts as the Saints opened Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play last week.
Panayotovich (5-1) had a one-hitter in eight innings for a 1-0 victory Tuesday over Cardinal Stritch. On Saturday against Trinity Christian, he worked 12 innings in another 1-0 victory.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
William Jewell 3-5, Lewis 2-1: Mike Barajas' single and a double by Austin Mastela (Lockport) drove in runs for Lewis (6-10, 2-6) in the first game of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Brennan Field. In the nightcap, Neal Tyrell (Minooka) and Barajas had two hits.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Flyers cited: Mariyah Brawner-Henley and Jamie Johnson were honored by both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and Daktronics on Monday.
The WBCA named Brawner-Henley to the NCAA Division II All-America Team. Johnson earned WBCA All-America honorable mention. Coach Lisa Carlsen was named Region 4 Coach of the Year for the second time.
The Daktronics/Division II Conference Commissioners Association named Brawner-Henley a second-team All-American and Johnson a third-teamer.
At the Elite Eight banquet in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Johnson received the Elite 89 Award. She carries a 4.00 cumulative GPA as an organizational communications major with minors in sport management and business studies. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA for each NCAA championship.
MEN’S GOLF
Lewis wins invite: Lewis posted a two-day score of 596 last weekend to win the Cardinal Invitational hosted by Saginaw Valley State at Boone Links Golf Course.
Medalist Alex Thode, teammate Robert Dofflemyer III and Doug Piesko of Lake Superior State tied at 143. Thode won on the second playoff hole.
Lewis’ Ryan Frederick (Lockport) tied for 23rd (156), Austin Buente was 29th (157) and Jeremy Fraser 37th (159). Eric Raube, who competed individually, was fourth (145).
BADMINTON
Lincoln-Way West goes 2-1: Cassie Ruettiger, Delayne Weston, Julia Monti, Grace Monti and Megan Smalter led Lincoln-Way West to a 4-2 victory Monday over host Downers Grove South and a 5-2 win over Wheaton Warrenville South. The Warriors (5-2) fell to Neuqua Valley, 6-2.
