Berwyn Boy Scout Troop 301 adds 2 more Eagles to roster

BERWYN – Berwyn Boy Scout Troop 301 added two more names to its roster of Eagle Scouts recently, the troop announced in March.

Eagle Scout Javier Montano, the troop's 99th Scout to attain Eagle status, and Eagle Scout Gregory Baran, the troop's 98th, now join a long list of those who achieved the ultimate rank in Troop 301.

Both Scouts are now acting in leadership positions within the troop and are getting ready for their next Pancake Breakfast, to be held April 19. Montano and Baran will be attending Owasippe Scout Reservation this summer.

Baran joined Pack 1 out of Irving School in Berwyn as a Tiger Scout in 2003 and remained in Pack 1 until 2009, completing his Webelos requirements and earning his Arrow of Light, according to the release. In February 2009, he moved to Troop 301, sponsored by the Berwyn Moose Family Center 424.

Baran rose through the ranks, achieving awards such as the Historic Trails Award and the National Medal for Outdoor Achievement, along with multiple Klondike Trophy victories. During Seventh grade, he relocated to Downers Grove, but continued his Scouting journey with Troop 301.

He completed his Eagle Project for the DuPage Forest Preserve in May 2014 and successfully passed his Eagle Board of Review on Sept. 19, 2014.

Now in his Junior year at Downers Grove South High School, Baran is also involved in Lemont Explorers Post and a Baden-Powell Venture Crew. He is visiting colleges now and hopes to pursue a degree in Law Enforcement.

Montano joined Pack 1 out of Irving Elementary School as a third-grader in 2007. Montano earned the Arrow of Light at the age of 10 after completing all Cub Scout requirements. He joined Boy Scout Troop 301 in March 2010.

Montano quickly began to rise up through the ranks of the troop under the guidance and leadership of older Scouts and Scoutmaster John "Mags" Magyarics, who recently retired as Scoutmaster in September. Montano received many awards in his journey to Eagle, including the Religious Service Emblem, the Historic Trails Award, 30 merit badges, and several Klondike Derby victories with his fellow Scouts.

He has held several officer positions in the unit and is currently nearing the end of his second term as Senior Patrol leader. For his Eagle Project, Montano conducted a sock drive this past summer with the BEDS program, collecting more than 800 pairs of socks for the homeless.

Montano successfully passed his Eagle Scout Board of Review on October 14, 2014 becoming the 99th Eagle Scout of Troop 301. He is currently in his Sophomore year at J. Sterling Morton West High School and would like to pursue a career as an officer in the Army Airborne or the United States Marine Corps.
