SAN DIEGO — A retirement ceremony for Senior Chief Fire Controlman (Surface Warfare/Air Warfare) Ronnie Wright of Sheffield was held Oct. 10 at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego, Calif.
Wright, the son of Marie “Penny” Wright and Bill Wright, joined the Navy in July 1990. Upon completion of recruit training in San Diego, Calif., in September 1990, he then went to Naval Station Mare Island to Data Systems “A” school and later “C” school for UYK-43 Computer/Peripheral located in Vallejo, CA where he was promoted to Data Systems 3rd Class Petty Officer.
After “C” school in April 1992, he took orders to Fleet Combat Training Command Pacific (FCTCPAC), Point Loma, Calif. In July 1994, he reported to USS Constellation (CV-64) in San Diego. He deployed to the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf for his first deployment in 1994-95 and picked up Petty Officer 2nd Class. In November 1997, he reported to Navy Recruiting Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., where he was assigned to Training Aids Department and help supply the drawings of the current base facilities and recruit buildings.
In November 1999, he reported back to San Diego onboard USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6). He made three more WESTPACs to the Persian Gulf and picked up now Fire Controlman 1st Class Petty Officer after they closed the Data Systems rate down in October 1998. Then in August 2003, FC1Wright reported to Commander Naval Surface Pacific, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado to staff duty as the Alcohol Drug Control Officer (ADCO), this is where he picked up Chief Petty Officer in 2004. He later filled the role of investigator for the Inspector General for Commander Naval Air Forces and Commander Naval Surface Forces.
In April 2007, he reported to Expeditionary Warfare Training Group, Pacific (EWTGPAC) to attend the Landing Craft Air Cushioned training for Craftmaster class. In August 2007 he then reported to Assault Craft Unit Five at Camp Pendleton, Calif., as LCAC Craftmaster for LC-56. While at ACU 5 he went on the 2008 RIM PAC and in 2009-10 another WESTPAC. In 2011 he was promoted to Senior Chief Petty Officer. Following that tour, in August 2012, he reported to Air Force Senior NCO Academy Maxwell Air Force Base, located in Montgomery, Ala., where he received seven weeks of senior enlisted leadership training. In October 2012, he then reported to Littoral Squadron Unit One, San Diego, for duty as SUW DET 3 Senior Enlisted Leader (SEL).
Senior Chief Wright’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star 3 awards, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star 2 awards, Good Conduct Medal with one Silver Star and two Bronze Stars, Navy Unit Commendation with Bronze Star, Meritorious Unit Commendation with Bronze Star, Navy Battle “E” with three awards, National Defense Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with one Bronze Star, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon one Silver Star, Navy Marksman Rifle Sharp Shooter and Navy Marksman Pistol Sharp Shooter.
Wright is a 1990 graduate of Western High School. Along with his wife, Divinia (Dee) Wright, and children, Jiovanni (Jio) Aldazabal (stepson), Ronnie Jr. Wright, Kassandra Wright and Lee Wright, his parents also attended the event. Unable to attend was his sister, Shelley Wright.
