Glenbard South senior Sydney Bauman has been a force in the paint throughout her varsity career in a Raiders uniform. And on Saturday, in the team’s regular season home finale, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville recruit went out in style, posting 30 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots in a 57-38 victory over Wheaton Academy. Bauman, the Glen Ellyn Bank & Trust athlete of the week, spoke with Glen Ellyn Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about the win and retiring coach Julie Fonda.
Schmid: Wheaton Academy gave your team a nice challenge, especially early. What were your thoughts on the game?
Bauman: Wheaton Academy plays a helter-skelter defense but everyone passed the ball very well and it was just my lucky night. It's a blessing to play with this team my senior year, there is so much talent and experience on the court.
Schmid: With it being the last home game and having alumni in the stands for coach Fonda, did that make it more special?
Bauman: We were making posters before the game and talking about all that coach Fonda has done for us and the least we could do is go all out for her. Our group, we don't take anything she has done for us lightly.
Schmid: What has Coach Fonda meant to you?
Bauman: She's been there for me, basically been my second mom. And she's always had time for me. She has helped me grow and I don't think I would have gotten a scholarship without her.
Schmid: With the playoffs fast approaching, do you feel your team is playing their best at the right time?
Bauman: We are seeing each other right now and we know where each other is supposed to be. Things are starting to click and we are playing basketball, we are not just robots. We are moving without the ball and reading each other's minds.
