BLOOMINGTON – The Geneva girls competitive dance team won the IHSA Class 2A state meet on Saturday, the second straight year the Vikings have pulled off the feat.
The Vikings' team score of 95.26 separated them from second-place Libertyville (92.12), third-place Lincoln-Way West (91.20) and the rest of the 10 Class 2A finalists.
The Vikings' team, coached by Amy VanWagenen, includes Mary Kafer, Elena Cramer, Gigi Hansen, Carly Ruggeri, Nikki Serra, Kinzie Sheridan, Natalie Erickson, Michelle Lapetina, Jenna Soldati, Diana Brognia, Alexis Pender, Gabrielle Weron, Maddie Emma, Nicole Rinne, Olivia Saltus and Julia Severino.
Neuqua Valley won the 3A state title and Mahomet-Seymour won the 1A title.
BOYS BOWLING
East takes third: At St. Clair Lanes in O'Fallon, St. Charles East finished third at the state tournament, totaling 12,559 pins and trailing only champion Rockton Hononegah (12,909) and runner-up Machesney Park Harlem (12,641).
Saints senior Dom Strauss finished fourth individually with 2,714 pins for the weekend. Aaron Mudlong (2,605), Dean Mudlong (2,526) and Robert Olsen (2,063) were the top performers for East.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Geneva 71, Glenbard North 38: At Geneva, hot-shooting Nate Navigato scored 31 points and the Vikings (20-2) won their 11th straight game while hitting the 20-win plateau for the fourth time in coach Phil Ralston's seven seasons.
St. Francis 50, Rock Island Alleman 38: At Wheaton, Gabe Johnson scored 23 points and Mike Shaw added 11 as the Spartans (12-9) prevailed as part of the Wheaton/Quad Cities Shootout.
Aurora Christian 83, Harvest Christian 47: At Elgin, Juwan Sisco led four Aurora Christian double figures scorers with 14 points as the Eagles moved to 14-5 on the season with the non-conference win.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Burlington Central 51, Montini 37: At Lombard, Central earned a marquee win against the Broncos, who beat the Rockets in a Class 3A state semifinal last season.
Central (20-3) made 10 3-pointers and was led by Sam Pryor (17 points) and Shelby Holt (12). The Rockets led, 39-22, then withstood an 11-0 run from the highly regarded Broncos.
"The girls were very focused," Central coach Mark Smith said. "We felt like [Montini] is a great program. … But the girls felt we could play with them, and they obviously played very well. It was a great win for the program."
Glenbard South 57, Wheaton Academy 38: At Glen Ellyn, Wheaton Academy was outscored 13-3 in the fourth quarter of the non-conference loss. Jamie Netzley and Elizabeth Melby contributed 11 points each for the Warriors.
