Marmion Academy senior Blake Turcich of Geneva was one of 10 local students honored with the 2014 Ted Brattin Civic Youth Award.

The annual award is presented to Fox Valley youth ages 13 to 19 years old, who – like Brattin – have shown outstanding leadership and selfless service to the community.

The award was presented at a luncheon hosted by the Rotary Club of Aurora in December.

Turcich has volunteered since grade school, states a news release. He has been a summer camp counselor at Camp Soar, where he works one-on-one with a severely handicapped camper for a week every summer.

Turcich also started “Polishing Pals,” a volunteer program of which he and other volunteers go to area nursing homes to polish the residents’ shoes, states the release.
