BERWYN – Is there such a thing as a bad taco?

A tortilla, some meat, fish or beans, a little pico de gallo, how can you go wrong?

Is there such a thing as the best taco?

The Berwyn Development Corporation set out to find out who served up the best taco among some of Berwyn’s favorite taquerias. The winner? Tacos jarocho at Tacos y Salsa.

The taqueria, located at 6346 26th St., went up against other local hot spots for tacos like Zacatacos, La Lupita Restaurant, Lalo’s and El Meson Express. It was through a blind taste test by a panel off judges that the Veracruz-style taco jarocho captured the taste buds of the judges and the title of “Best.”

Tacos Y Salsa’s signature taco jarocho starts out with grilled tilapia, which is then glazed with garlic and lime juice and served on a flour tortilla.

Owner Laura Guerreno developed a menu that includes tacos from the various states in Mexico. Taco jarocho is a style from Veracruz, Mexico, a coastal state known for its seafood.

The competition was hosted at the Berwyn Park District’s Liberty Cultural Center where each restaurant prepared their tacos on site.

Judges included Carla Trombetta of Carla’s Place, Christina Montes Scott of Teleguia Media & Event, Berwyn Mayor Robert Lovero, Christina Tully Aranza of Autre Monde Cafe & Spirits, Dario Solano of Cafe Latino and Ronnie Vrhel of Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge. Their votes were combined with those taken earlier in a public poll.
