SYCAMORE – Camille Asanoski refers to her business as mama’s house, and she’s thinking fondly about old memories as she prepares to close.
Asanoski, owner of Tommy O's Family Restaurant, 107 S. Sacramento St., said Sunday will be the last day Tommy O's is open. Camille and her husband Jesse have owned the restaurant since 2008, although its was first established in 1948 and renamed Tommy O's in 1990 by then-owner Tom Oestreicher of Sycamore. It has remained under that name since.
Asanoski said she mostly wants to thank all of her loyal customers, who she considers friends.
“This is a good town, with friendly people,” she said. “The customers are like family. We call them friends, not customers.”
Camille Asanoski said she found out last week that the owners were planning to sell the property when inspectors stopped by the restaurant. A representative at Summers Property Management, which manages the property, declined to comment.
Asanoski said she and her husband planned to retire at the restaurant, which is the third they’ve operated, so she is sad.
She said as the mama, she spent many days giving advice, or lending an ear. She said as word has spread about their plans to close, she’s received many hugs from customers, as well.
“Sycamore people are the best people in the world,” she said. “This is an amazing little place. This place has been here forever. It’s old just like me. We just had no idea. But life works in mysterious ways.”
When Asanoski decided to close, she told Mayor Ken Mundy first, who she said is a loyal customer. Mundy said he’s enjoyed ordering a special when he goes there, which is two eggs, two sausages, two pieces of bacon and two pancakes.
He said he is pleased that there is still interest in the property in Sycamore.
“They’re really nice people, and I ate a lot of breakfast there,” Mundy said. “It is what it is. Things change, and we go on.”
