City of Joliet advises where to take old TVs

JOLIET – The city of Joliet is advising residents of locations where old televisions can be taken since they can no longer be thrown out with the trash.

A state law that went into effect in January 2012 prohibits the disposal of electronic waste in landfills.

The city noted that Vintage Tech offers a front-door collection service for residential electronics throughout Will County. The service costs $25 and can be used for up to 10 items at a time.

In Joliet, some stores and other operations accept TV sets at no charge. Those locations include:

• Best Buy at 3351 Mall Loop Drive, which takes TVs up to 32 inches and flat screen TVs up to 50 inches;

• The Forest Preserve District of Will County at 17540 Laraway Road, which accepts all electronics;

• Goodwill at 23084 Hennepin Drive, which accepts TVs and computer monitors;

• Habitat Restore at 200 S. Larkin Ave., which accepts TVs and computer monitors;

• Morning Star Treasure Chest at 2155 W. Jefferson St., which accepts working TVs;

• Unique Thrift Store at 2155 W. Jefferson St., which accepts TVs, computer monitors and radios.

Other recycling locations are available outside Joliet at the Channahon Township Building, City of Lockport Highway Department, Goodwill store in New Lenox, New Lenox Township Building, Staples store in Shorewood and Troy Township Highway Department.

More information about electronics recycling can be found on the City of Joliet website, www.cityofjoliet.info.
