HCC's Harris to Join Bulldog softball squad

Eastland High School graduate Marissa Harris, with her parents' approval, signs a letter of intent to play softball for the Benedictine University Bulldogs in Springfield.

SPRINGFIELD – Marissa Harris has signed a letter of intent to play softball for the Benedictine University Bulldogs next season, under the direction of head coach Kerry Crum. Harris will transfer from Highland Community College.

The projected physical therapy major, a graduate of Eastland High School in Lanark, will bring much-needed speed and size to the Bulldog lineup, Crum said.

"Marissa comes highly recommended in both positions, and we are excited to see what she has to offer."

Harris and the HCC Cougars finished 17-25 last season with Harris hitting .327 in 36 games. She added 22 RBIs in 25 hits and six stolen bases, pulling double duty in the field and on the mound for HCC.

A four-time Northwest Upstate Illini All-Conference selection out of Eastland High School, the Shannon native was a First-Team All-State selection her junior year and Super 60 Senior All-Star Classic selection in 2012.

Harris brings the recruiting class number to 13 for Crum as they look forward to another trip to the AMC Tournament this season.

The Bulldogs finished 27-27, making their first appearance to the tournament and just outs-away from knocking out Columbia College in the first round.
