JOLIET – Things started out rough for the Joliet Slammers in Monday’s series finale against Schaumburg and didn’t get much better as the Frontier League game progressed.
The Boomers used a first-inning grand slam to jump out to a 6-0 lead after half an inning.
Joliet collected single runs in the first, second and fourth innings to try to stay in the contest but Schaumburg ended the drama by scoring seven runs in the sixth to grab a 16-3 lead.
The final score was 18-4, according to the Slammers.
Schaumburg’s Michael Valadez smacked the first-inning grand slam and was 3 for 5 with six RBIs through the game’s first eight innings.
Also for the Boomers, Tony Delmonico hit two homers and was 3 for 5 with four RBIs with one inning remaining.
In the first, Joliet’s Max Casper and Russell Moldenhauer doubled to bring in the first run and an inning later, Adam Giacalone double and eventually scored to make it 7-2.
The Slammers scored a run in the fourth when Casper doubled home JD Dorgan. Then in the sixth, Adrian English scored on a fielder’s choice.
The Slammers are off for the next two days before heading to Evansville for three games in two days before returning home Saturday against Southern Illinois.
