SPRING GROVE – Enrollment has opened for a free program designed to teach teens and young adults about firefighting and emergency medicine.
Spring Grove Fire Explorer Post 1800 is open to 14- through 21-year-olds and meets year-round at 7 p.m. Mondays at the Spring Grove Fire Station, 8214 Richardson Road.
The program was started in 2007 and has since transitioned 18 explorers to regular fire service jobs, including three who became paramedics last year, said Bob Stevens, who is a retired assistant chief and serves as president of the Spring Grove Firefighters Association.
The Spring Grove Fire Protection District hopes to develop a cadet program that the explorers can graduate to, Stevens said.
The program is free and open to anyone, not just those that live in the district.
Applications can be picked up at the Spring Grove Fire Station. Enrollment is open until Sept. 15.
