ROUND LAKE BEACH – Marcian Butur had wanted to become a police officer, but he faced a hurdle: He wasn't an American citizen.
In June 2012, he became a citizen and in late December of that year, he took his first police officer test with the Round Lake Beach Police Department. In July 2013, Butur got a call back and was hired Sept. 1.
On Monday, he was officially sworn in as a police officer before the village board.
Butur attended the Police Academy in Champaign and is now on the afternoon shift.
He moved to the United States in 2002 from Romania, graduated from Mundelein High School in 2005 and received a bachelor's degree from at Loyola University in Chicago.
He has served in the Marines since 2009 and now holds the rank of corporal. He has also worked for Sprint.
Police Chief David Hare told the village that Butur's wife, Victoria, was her husband's biggest supporter. Their daughter, Khloe, was born while he was on shift in January.
Tim Gannon, who was raised on Chicago's north side, was also sworn in Monday. He graduated from Maine East High School and graduated in 1998. He started college at Columbia College in Chicago, then transferred to Oakton Community College after a year to finish his general studies.
He worked in real estate for four years, on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange for six years and in retail banking for nearly seven years.
"Tim began testing for a career in law enforcement, but only with agencies where he has or has had a connection either personally or through business," Chief Hare told the village trustees. "Tim has had both relationships when it comes to Round Lake Beach."
Gannon volunteered with Hook, Aim, Cross, Punch boxing in Round Lake Beach, "helping youth turn their energy toward activities rather than gangs and violence," Hare said.
Gannon and his wife, Karrianne, have two children, Addison, 7, and Riley, 6. They live in Berkeley, Ill.
He, too, attended the Police Academy.
