Cash Saver closes Harvard grocery store

HARVARD – Regional grocery chain Sullivan’s Foods closed its Cash Saver store in Harvard earlier this month, but city and economic development officials are hoping another retailer will fill the vacancy.

The grocery outlet had been the anchor store at the shopping center at 1299 S. Division St. Sullivan’s Foods briefly closed its Harvard store in late 2012 for a makeover before reopening it as Cash Savers. But store officials told city officials in February things weren’t going well, City Administrator David Nelson said. The store was shuttered in early May.

The Harvard Economic Development Corp. is willing to work with any retailer interested in the site, Executive Director Charlie Eldredge said. However, many want to see another grocery store open in Harvard in addition to the Walmart Super Center at 21101 McGuire Road.

“We think there is room for another grocery facility in Harvard,” Eldredge said.

Officials at Sullivan’s Foods, which also has a store in Marengo, could not immediately be reached for comment.
