DARIEN – Members of the 1974 Lyons Township High School hockey team were honored in a pre-game ceremony Jan. 11 at the Darien Sportsplex as part of the annual IHSHL Hayes-Suburban Division Junior Varsity and Varsity All-Star games.
Defensemen Steve Sheehan and Steve Wierma, forwards Steve Bruce and Mark Johnson and goaltender Steve Bromberger were presented with a commemorative plaque marking the occasion.
LT's Hockey Club was started in the spring of 1972 by two students and a teacher, according to a news release. In its first season, the club made it to the championship game, before falling to New Trier High School in a 5-2 loss.
In the team's '73 and '74 season, the club grew quickly in size and three teams were formed, with the varsity team joining the West Suburban League. The team was undefeated in its regular season and went on to win the Cougar Cup the first time the cup was awarded.
LT most recently won the cup again in 2009 and 2010.
The event at the Darien Sportsplex was part of the annual All-Star games. The division is celebrating the 40th season of it varsity championship - the Cougar Cup.
The cup was originally donated to the West Suburban High School Hockey League by the Chicago Cougars hockey club that played in the World Hockey Association during the 1970s.
Members of the LT team not in attendance included forwards John Garbe, mark McClellan, Chuck Falore, Bob Lynch and Cam Skye; defensemen Bill Sheehan, Jim Dewhurst, Terry Houdak and Mark Glombecki; and goaltender Mark Samuelson.
Two members of the team who have died were also remembered at the even: Jim Jalovec, who died in a helicopter crash during a relief mission in Haiti and E.J. Clarke, who died of cancer.
