BERWYN – Officials are trying to determine what caused a fire that destroyed a Burger King restaurant at 3441 S. Harlem Ave., Wednesday morning.
Fire officials said they received a call from the restaurant's manager at 8:03 a.m. who reported smoke coming from the southeast corner of the roof. The manager and two other employees then evacuated the building. There were no customers inside at the time.
Firefighters arrived minutes later to find fire and smoke showing out of the southeast corner of the roof. Firefighters entered the building to fight the blaze, but were quickly withdrawn as a result of heavy smoke and flames inside the restaurant, Fire Chief Denis O'Halloran said. Firefighters continued to fight the blaze from outside of the restaurant.
Police closed both lanes of Harlem Avenue from Ogden Avenue to the south and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks to the north.The road was reopened at 10:15 a.m.
Fire departments from Riverside, North Riverside, Forest Park, Stickney, Cicero and River Forest assisted Berwyn firefighters with the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
