Sears Appliances & Hardware Athlete of the Week: Downers Grove South' Alec Arvanitakis

Downers Grove South’s football team uncharacteristically missed the playoffs last season, but the Mustangs are heading back to the postseason thanks in part to the efforts of Alec Arvanitakis. The running back carried the rushing load in back-to-back wins to close the regular season and also was a factor in the passing game in both games. Arvanitakis, the Sears Appliances & Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his role on the team and the mentality a running back.

What’s the mentality as a running back knowing you’re going to get hit on almost every play?

I want to pop the other person. If I’m going to take a hit, I’m going to dish a hit, too. I mean, I’m not going to go down without a fight.

What do you think your best attribute as a running back?

I don’t even know how to answer. I guess I just try to make myself as balanced as I can. Anything I can contribute to the team to help, I guess that’s my best attribute.

What’s the dynamic like between you and fullback Le’Devin Smith?

We’ve been in the backfield with each other for the last three years – sophomore year, last year for half the year and now this year. We kind of have a connection. I know where he’s going to make his blocks and he knows where I’m going to be. I know he’s going to sacrifice his body for me and I’m going to sacrifice my body for him.
