This photo, given to the Tiskilwa Historical Society by the family of Ted and Mabel Wilson, is labeled “Providence Young People at Lake Senachwine. Old hotel and bandstand.” Judging by the attire, the picnic probably was held around 1900. Unfortunately, no participant is identified. The historical society would welcome information from any descendants who might recognize a grandma or grandpa. The old hotel was destroyed by fire many years ago.
Excerpts from an Aug. 31, 1882, article in the Henry Republican: “The new hotel at the Senachwine Sand Bar (called) “The Undercliff” will be ready to receive visitors about Oct. 15. ... The ground plan is 60 X 40 feet, facing the lake to the east. The building is to be three stories in height, with veranda on first and second floors. ... The dining room can be entered by double doors from the main hall and by means of folding doors, can be thrown into one with the ladies’ parlor, thus giving a dancing floor of 30 X 40 feet. ... Spacious stables, floating back house, boat house, etc. will be erected at the proper time. ... The lake is an immense attraction with its myriad waterfowl and inexhaustible supply of the gamiest of fish, pickerel and black bass. Retired from the hum of business and cares of life, there will always be rest and refreshing sport at the “Undercliff. ... We must all enjoy its attractions and help to make it a great success.”
