OREGON – Ogle County Sheriff’s Police are investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at Rochelle jail.
Sheriff Michael Harn said Tuesday that he hopes to complete the investigation into the July 6 death of Charles M. DeShazo, 33, of Rochelle, next week.
He declined to say how DeShazo died.
DeShazo was arrested for domestic battery at 7:34 p.m. that day and was in the holding cell at the police department, awaiting transport to the Ogle County Jail in Oregon. He was in the cell only a short time, while the arresting officer completed paperwork, which is procedure, Rochelle Police Chief Eric Higby said.
Officers found DeShazo unconscious around 8 p.m. and performed CPR with the assistance of Rochelle Fire Department personnel. He was pronounced dead at Rochelle Community Hospital.
The sheriff’s department is doing the investigation at the request of Rochelle police and the Ogle County coroner, Higby said.
