Surveillance video shows alleged robbery in progress at C.D. Peacock in Oakbrook Center

OAK BROOK – One suspect is in custody after being shot and police are looking for two others in an alleged armed robbery Sunday of C.D. Peacock jewelry store, 172 Oakbrook Center, police said.

Normalcy returned Monday morning as C.D. Peacock planned to open during its regular hours. The store declined to comment on the robbery pending police investigation.

At 3:40 p.m. Sunday, three men entered the store, according to Oak Brook Police. One allegedly used a four pound sledge hammer to smash the top of a glass display case. An armed security guard at the store confronted the man with the hammer, as the other two suspects escaped.

Police found the man with the sledgehammer with a bullet wound to the abdomen.

The wounded 24-year-old black male from Detroit is under police guard at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, and his condition has been listed as critically stable.

Kruger said the sledgehammer was the only weapon recovered at the scene and it's too soon to know if any of the other suspects had any additional weapons.

The two suspects at large fled in a black Jeep Liberty, west on 22nd Street, police said. Both suspects were described as black men in their 20s or early 30s. One was heavy set, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, 230 pounds with a tattoo on the right side of his neck, wearing a black T-shirt. The other man was described as taller, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, 160 pounds with a heavy beard and a white T-shirt.

Police did not release his name.

The car was stolen about one to two hours prior to the robbery and belonged to an employee working at Oakbrook Center, Kruger said. The Jeep Liberty was abandoned in an Oak Brook Terrace office building parking lot and located by Oak Brook Terrace Police Department. It was then recovered by the Oak Brook Police Department and will be processed for additional evidence.

Kruger said the police are investigating how the three suspects originally arrived at Oakbrook Center and the police department is trying to obtain clearer video footage from other stores.

"We're also looking at some video footage that may possibly involve the vehicle we recovered," he said.

Kruger said police have not been able to talk to the wounded suspect in the hospital because of his current condition, but are hoping to by late Monday.

"At this point, as I said yesterday, there is no danger to the Village of Oak Brook or Oakbrook Center," Kruger said.
