MOUNT CARROLL – A longtime area high school coach was found dead in his overturned vehicle north of Mount Carroll late Saturday night.
Bruce A. Scheidegger, 54, was reported missing to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department at 11:07 p.m. by the Orland Park Police Department, according to a news release. Scheidegger resides in Orland Park but also has a home in Lake Carroll.
The sheriff’s department conducted a search of the area. A deputy found a vehicle on Loran Road near Indian Trail Road, north of Mount Carroll. The vehicle had been traveling north on Loran Road, left the roadway, drove over a steep embankment and overturned, the news release said.
Authorities identified the driver of the vehicle as Scheidegger. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said.
The incident remains under investigation.
Scheidegger coached girls basketball at Sterling High School from 1998 until 2007. He also served as activities director from 2003 to 2007. He left Sterling to become the athletic director at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, a position he held at the time of his death.
Scheidegger was a Chadwick native. He taught and coached in the Prophetstown schools in the 1980s and at Dixon High School from 1985 until he came to Sterling in 1998.
